Unit Overview
(Context)

Mark is an American college graduate who majors in Chinese and just finishes three years of internship and work in China and Taiwan.  Mark loves Chinese culture, and has been in a relationship for a year.  But long-term relationship and marriage go beyond the scope of individuals, and Mark’s parents are conservative Americans. Mark faces some cultural challenges and thus is uncertain whether to go on with the relationship.  Mark would like to hear your perspectives and advices.

Long-term romantic relationship is a social institution that reflects culture and influences culture.

Essential Questions

  1. How does Chinese/American culture influence people’s decisions on choosing partners? How do these decisions in turn shape the Chinese/American culture?
  2. What challenges do people face in cross-cultural romantic relationships, and why? How would you address these challenges?

8-10 hours for implementing the complete unit including all four language skills and three modes of communication.  The following unit plan focuses mostly on interpretive reading and presentational writing.
